About billiards

The collective term of billiards covers three types of games. The first is carom, the second is snooker and the third is pool billiards. The latter is the most popular type of billiards at amateur level. There are also three types of game of pool billiards, one is 14/1, the next is 8, which is most commonly known as "pool", and the third is 9. If 8 is the favourite of amateurs, it is safe to say that 9 is the favourite among competitive billiards players.

Rules

The game 8 is played with one white ball (pushed with a cue stick) and 15 coloured balls. The coloured balls are divided into two groups: one group is made up of 1 to 7 fully coloured balls and the other group is made up of half coloured striped balls. The balls must be arranged in a triangular shape with the front ball at the dagger point.

The starting player shall be designated by a tempo shot, then the player who wins the first game may take the starting shot for the second game, and so on (although this may be regulated by the tournament rules). If a match consists of several sets (1 set = 5 games won, but the number of games is determined by the tournament rules), the players shall take turns starting the sets, and the starting shot for the final set shall again be determined by a tempo shot.

Game 9 is played with one white ball (pushed with a cue stick) and 9 coloured balls (possibly numbered 1-9). The balls must be placed in a diamond shape in a way that the number 1 ball is placed on the dagger point.

The lowest numbered ball must always be hit first, i.e. number 1 first, then number 2, etc. Neither the ball nor the hole must be announced. Whoever wins the first game starts the second, etc., although this may vary depending on given rules.

The 14/1 game is played with the white ball (pushed with a cue stick) and 15 coloured balls. The coloured balls are numbered 1 to 15. The balls must be placed in the triangle with the first ball on the dagger point.

The 14/1 is an announcement game, so you have to announce both the ball and the hole. One point is awarded for each ball that is announced and correctly sent into the hole.
